Schmaidl's music is driven by moods, experimentation, and by time spent in nature. He enjoys the music of contemporary composers, the sound of traditional instruments in small and large ensembles, and the use of sound sources that aren't typically considered musical.

Schmaidl (the 'ai' is pronounced as 'eye') is a nickname from when the musician played guitar in 1980s hair metal bands.
